Accelerated Reader ( AR ) is an individualized reading program for grades 3 - 6 that allows students to read books at their level of ability. The goals of the program are to have students read more, select a variety of books ( fiction and non-fiction ), and develop stronger comprehension and vocabulary skills.
Many of the books in the our library are part of the Accelerated Reader database. These books have been evaluated as to reading level and length and are tagged by color for easy identification. Each of these books also has a label on the back identifying their point value. The longer the book and the higher the reading level, the more points the book is worth. Some of the books in our library also have Accelerated Reader quizzes. The spine of these books have  " AR" stickers on them. Students who read these books can take a quiz on the computer after completing the book. The quiz is multiple-choice and is based on the book's content. Tests may have 5, 10 or 20 items, depending on the length and difficulty of the book. The computer scores the test, awards the student points based on the results, and keeps a record of the results.
Grade 3 - 6 teachers use Accelerated Reading in a variety of ways to assist their students in the development of reading. Students are also encouraged to select, read and enjoy books from the library which are not part of the Accelerated Reading program.
